Digraphs /Ch/ & /Sh/: Charlie's and Shopping

This week we talked about the digraphs /ch/ and /sh/ and brainstormed words that began with each.  

We made Charlie's /Ch/ Menu and a /Sh/ Shop.

You may remember the Sesame Street video from last year about Charlie's /ch/ restaurant.  If not, you must check it out! It's so cute.

Yes, that is a $100 cheeseburger and $1,000 bowl of chili. 

That chef better be the best chef in the world!

Sesame Street also offers a video for the /Sh/ sound.  I'm always impressed by how many good videos Sesame Street has.  

Digraphs /ch/ & /wh/

This week we learned about the /ch/ and /wh/ digraphs and their accompanying sounds.

For /ch/, we watched the Sesame Street video below about Charlie's restaurant:

And then we made a menu to go along with it! Students came up with the OUTRAGEOUS prices, by the way.  These menus feature the slightly lower prices I was able to talk them into!

We also made chains with /ch/ words.

For /wh/, we made this cute little whale with /wh/ words in water droplets!

I greatly dislike teaching the /wh/ sound because it's so hard to hear.  Students begin to put h's in words that don't need them, like 'whind' or 'whater.' Wompwomp. It's a tough one! If you're a teacher reading this, please share...How do you teach /wh/ in your classroom?

Digraphs /th/ & /sh/, "-op" Word Family

 We've highlighted almost all the letters of the alphabet, with the exception of Uu which is coming up next week.  It's time to move our spotlight to digraphs and word families!  This week we discussed /th/ and /sh/ both at the beginning and ends of words.  We made fish with /sh/ scales and a bathtub with /th/ bubbles!

And since it's the rainy season of Spring, we made umbrellas with -op raindrops:

Next week we'll work on /ch/ and /wh/ as well as the '-un' and '-ive' word families.
