Election Day!

Well, it's that time again! Time for the annual Class President election! We started the day by watching the animated read-alouds Duck for President and Grace for President, below.

Then we wrote some campaign speeches!

I am a good president because I stand pretty in line and I do what the teacher (asks).

When the teacher is reading a story I be quiet. (Love the "bee" from our science labeling unit! Oops!)

I will be a good president because I sit good on the carpet.

I will be a good president because I stand in line.

I want to be a president because I listen to the teacher. (He placed emphasis on his cape in the picture during his actual speech.)

I will be a good (president) because I am nice. I listen. And I know the answer.

I had the most stickers in the month of October! I had 64! (We earn stickers for good behavior.)

I help people when they get hurt!

We read the speeches and showed our pictures to the class. Each child got 5 votes in the first election to narrow down our candidates.

We kept track of the votes with tiny scraps of paper.

When the 5 finalists were on the ballot, it was time to step into the voting booth!

Of course, we had to tie some more writing in... So the kids actually wrote their peer's name instead of checking a box!

These kids did a great job really thinking through who would be the best for the job... After all, the president does get to be line leader for an entire month!

Casting her vote!

And... Drum roll, please!

The winner was Ellison! Say Hello to our class president for the 2014-2015 school year! The best line from his speech? "I think I'll be a great class president and one day the real president!"

I'll keep an eye out for him in the future!

At the beginning of the day, no one knew what an election was. Hopefully your kids can answer now! Ask them how voting went!
