Earth Day: If a Tree Could Talk

Each year as Earth Day approaches, kindergarten teachers send home a letter about the recycling project.  Students and their families are asked to create something new from used materials they have lying around.  The idea is simply to turn trash into treasure.  The day the assignment is given, students watch the Reading Rainbow "Two Old Potatoes and Me" episode, which gets the wheels turning about what sorts of things students might want to make.

Here are a few examples of products students came up with (sorry for the weird effect; I didn't realize I had a specific camera setting on when I took the photos):

A vase from an old can

A birdfeeder from an old juice bottle

A butterfly toy from old paper towel rolls

Students also made their own copy of "If a Tree Could Talk," which focuses on what the Earth would say to us if it could tell us how it was feeling.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!
